Alex's 2011 Season of Personal Bests

Alex set Personal Best (PB) times in every distance he ran in 2011. The only distances with pre-2011 PBs are 20Km (the Fulton Campbell 20K is now a Half-Marathon distance) and 50K (set at his one & only 50K Maritime Fox Run). Here's the stats:

1 Mile

2011 ADL Golden Mile - "I finished in 5:14, beat my mile PB, 8 seconds fasten than last year and came in 4th out of 79 runners."

2011 Proude's Shoes 5K - "I finished in 18:22, beat my 5km personal best of 45 seconds faster than 2008 Deltaware and came in 3rd out of 119 runners."
2011 Deltaware 5K - "I finished in 17:53 and came in 6th out of 264 runners, beat my 5km PB, 31 seconds faster than last month's Proude's Shoes 5km and break sub 18 minutes."
2011 Banks Financial 5K - "I finished in 17:42, beat my 5km PB, 11 seconds faster than June's Deltaware Systems Inc 5km and came in 3rd out of 59 runners."

Kent Building Supplies Run 2011 - "I finished in 25:51, my 7km PB, 2:12 faster than last year and came in 3rd out of 42 runners."

5 Mile

2011 Clark's 5 Miler- "I finished in 30:45, beat my 5 mile PB time by 3:25 faster than 2008 Clark's 5 Miler and came in 6th out of 77 runners."
2011 Red's Corner - "I finished in 28:18, beat my 5 miles PB, 2:27 faster than Clark's Toyota 5 Miler and came in 3rd out of 66 runners."

10K

2011 Bunny Hop - "I finished in 40:26 and beat my 10km personal best, the 2004 Wally Rodd (40:58)."
2011 Sporting Intentions Spring Run Off - "I finished in 40:03 and beat my 10km personal best 23 seconds from last Saturday's Bunny Hop and came in 3rd out of 56 runners."
2011 Rural Raiders Run - "I finished in 38:41 and beat my 10km personal best and first sub 40 minutes, 1:22 faster than last month's Sporting Intentions and came in 6th out of 30 runners."
2011 Cox & Palmer - "I finished in 38:17, beat my 10km PB, 24 seconds faster than May's Rural Raider Run and came in 7th out of 79 runners."
2011 Source for Sports - "I finished in 37:46, beat the 10km PB, 31 seconds faster than last month's Cox and Palmer Run and came in 4th out of 90 runners."

11.667Km / 7.25 Miles

2011 Dunk River Run - "I finished in 46:01, beat my race time 5:11 faster than 2009 Dunk River Run and came in 3rd out of 68 runners. I won the 3rd Place Overall trophy and Male 20-29 1st place medal."

10 Mile

2011 TOSH Farmers Helping Farmers 10 Miler - "I finished in 1:03:19, beat my 10 mile PB, 3:01 faster than Miscouche Firefighters 10 Mile Run in 2009 and came in 5th out of 64 runners."

15K

2011 Baglole Scenic Road Run - "I finished in 1:04:26, beat my 15km PB, 2:06 faster than Rotary Run For Mikinduri in 2008 and came in 7th out of 73 runners. I got stung on my arm at first half Km."
2011 Rotary Run for Mikinduri - "I won the 15km race and finished in 1:00:51, beat my 15km PB, 3:35 faster than last Sunday's Desmond Baglole Scenic Road Run and came in 1st out of 43 runners."

Half Marathon

2011 Fulton Campbell Half Marathon - "I finished in 1:28:04, beat my half marathon PB time, 10:27 faster than 2008 Fulton Campbell and came in 7th out of 64 runners."

25K

2011 Kensington Harvest Festival 25K - "I finished in 1:48:33, beat my 25km PB, 9:14 faster than last year and came in 8th out of 79 runners."

Marathon

2011 PEI Marathon - "I finished in 3:12:45, beat my marathon PB, 16:44 faster than my first marathon in 2008, came in 11th out of 252 runners and 1st in Male 20-29."

The 2011 Prince Edward Island Marathon - An PB 11th Place Finish, 1st in my Division!

It was sun, few clouds and windy and 13 degrees. The Prince Edward Island Marathon at Brackley Beach Complex. The full marathon course on Gulf Shore Parkway, Rte 6, Confederation Trail, Brackley Point Rd, Sherwood Rd and University Ave.

The first half in 1:33:00 and in 11th place.

I finished in 3:12:45, beat my marathon PB, 16:44 faster than my first marathon in 2008,
came in 11th out of 252 runners and 1st in Male 20-29.

Mike MacKinnon won the marathon and Kathy Armitage of New Maryland, NB for the top female, Kara Grant was top PEI female.

My next marathon will be Disney in Florida in January!

Miscouche runner takes Island marathon victory

MARATHON

The male and female victors in the 2011 BMO Nesbitt Burns Prince Edward Island Island Marathon are old hands at this winning thing.

Sunday, Mike MacKinnon of Miscouche won his fourth Island Marathon, while Kathy Wilson-Armitage of New Maryland, N.B., won her first full-marathon on P.E.I. but had nabbed first place in the Island half-marathon in 2004.

Both battled a sunny and warm but blustery fall day.

MacKinnon finished in two hours, 43 minutes 19 seconds, while Wilson-Armitage crossed the finish line in Charlottetown in 3:18:45.

Temperatures hovered around 16 C and winds were a steady 30 kilometres or more per hour.

“It was tough. I thought ‘Oh my God, this wind is stronger that I thought’ and I knew it would cost me,” said MacKinnon, 38, adding the heat wasn’t a problem thanks to the breezy day. “Not with the way the wind was. The heat wasn’t a big deal.”

Second place overall went to Steven Baglole of Charlottetown in 2:44:51, while Chuck Dixon of Sackville, N.B., finished third overall in 2:52:14.

It’s the fifth straight year an Island runner has won the hometown marathon.

The last non-Islander to win was David MacLennan of Scotsburn, N.S.

MacKinnon’s last Island Marathon win came in 2008.

“They’re all challenging. I’ve had to battle it out,” said MacKinnon, a automotive teacher at Three Oaks High School in Summerside. “If I can outpace them (the field) I have a chance. If it gets to a kick I don’t have a chance and they know that.”

MacKinnon said he plans a quiet family celebration with wife Janice and children Hailey, 10, and Ryan, 7.

For Wilson-Armitage, her first 42-kilometre run in over a decade had similar challenges, notwithstanding her long break from the pavement.

“It was brutal. Strong headwinds and a battle (with the hills) on the finish. It was my first (Island) Marathon in 11 years. It was like my first, but it will be my last,” said Wilson-Armitage, 46, smiling and wrapped in a silver, wind-resistant heat blanket after the race. “In this weather I was really pleased. I’m just pleased to be finished.”

Former Olympian Kara Grant of Mermaid finished second among the women in 3:24:22; third place went to Brenda Benson of Summerside in 3:26:03.

Despite the win, Wilson-Armitage doesn’t think she's prone to winning. It's just a matter of numbers, she said.

“In the smaller marathons (and half-marathons), the field of women is so small,” she said.

Wilson-Armitage also credits her husband Michael Armitage for support, and her friend Allison MacDonald, who ran the half-marathon as a warmup to next month’s New York Marathon.

“She’s my inspiration,” said Wilson-Armitage.

So with the race behind her, what will Wilson-Armitage do to celebrate her second overall marathon victory (she won a marathon in Fredericton, N.B., years ago)?

“I think I’ll drink white wine, if I can walk,” she said. “Right now I’m starting to seize up. I’ve got to keep moving.”

In the men’s half-marathon, Jonathan Gendron of Shearwater, N.S., finished first in 1:16:49, followed by Stanley Chaisson of Stratford, who won the full marathon in 2009, in 1:17:35.

Ian James Doyle of Sydney, N.S., was third (1:19:19).

Stacy Juckett of Dartmouth, N.S., was top female half-marathoner, finishing in 1:29:52.

Gabrielle Gallagher of Halifax, N.S., crossed in 1:33:17, while Jennifer Pizio-Perr of Tignish was third (1:34:19).

P.E.I. marathon draws thousands of runners

P.E.I.'s annual marathon this weekend drew in an estimated 2,500 runners from across Canada and the United States.

Myrtle Jenkins-Smith, one of the organizers, said it's become an international event.

"We are a Boston [marathon] qualifier so we have people that come here to qualify for Boston," Jenkins-Smith told CBC News.

"We had the largest percentage of marathoners in eastern Canada qualify [for the Boston marathon] last year, so that's pretty exciting for P.E.I."

Mothers set example with marathon

For two mothers, best friends from Nova Scotia, Sunday's P.E.I. Marathon was an opportunity to set an example.

Bridget Roy and Laurie Ann Brown of Liverpool spent a year training for the event, both losing more than 60 lbs.

"It really does mean a lot," said Roy.

"We both have young children and we're role models for our children now, to have a healthy lifestyle."

Roy and Brown, who ran the half marathon, were amongst more than 2,500 people who took part in marathon events Sunday.

Phys Ed teacher Stan Chaisson sees the event as part of the growing popularity of running growing on the Island.

Just last week I was at Eliot River School with my St Jean Consolidated cross-country runners. Oh my goodness, there must have been about 800 runners there between grade three and six, just in our zone," he said.

Mike MacKinnon of Miscouche, P.E.I. had the best time in the marathon. He did it in 2 hours and 45 minutes, more than a minute ahead of the second place finisher.

Runners who finished the P.E.I. marathon can use it to qualify for the Boston marathon.

A 10 Mile PB - TOSH Farmers Helping Farmers Run

It was cloud and fog and 15 degrees.

The TOSH Farmers Helping Farmers Run at Three Oaks High School. The out and back course on Summerside Waterfront and boardwalk.

David Gallant won the 10 mile race and Jennifer Pizio-Perry for the top female.

I finished in 1:03:19, beat my 10 mile PB, 3:01 faster than Miscouche Firefighters 10 Mile Run in 2009 and came in 5th out of 64 runners.

Jimmy B won the 5 mile race and Paula Finkle for the top female.

A Personal Best 5K in new shoes - The Banks Financial 5K Run

It was sun and cloud and 14 degrees.

The Banks Financial 5Km Run at Banks Financial. The loop course on Queen Street, Kirkwood Drive, Brighton Road, Victoria Park and Euston Street.

Leo McCosham won the race and Brenda Benson for the top female.

I finished in 17:42, beat my 5km PB, 11 seconds faster than June's Deltaware Systems Inc 5km and came in 3rd out of 59 runners. I wore new shoes won at Harvest Festival 25Km for first run.

I won the race in PB time! The Mikinduri 15Km Run

It was sunny and 18 degrees.

The Rotary Run for Mikinduri at Metro Credit Union in Stratford. The course on Kinlock Rd, Keppoch Rd, Georgetown Rd, and Stratford Rd.

I won the 15km race and finished in 1:00:51, beat my 15km PB, 3:35 faster than last Sunday's Desmond Baglole Scenic Road Run and came in 1st out of 43 runners. Kristy Newson for the top female.

Matt MacDonald won the 5km race and Sandra McConkey for the top female.

The Desmond Baglole Scenic Road Run in Millvale. The loop course on Millvale Rd, Old Princetown Rd, Warburton Rd, and New Orleans Rd.

Steve Baglole won the race and Jen Nicholson for the top female.

I finished in 1:04:26, beat my 15km PB, 2:06 faster than Rotary Run For Mikinduri in 2008 and came in 7th out of 73 runners. I got stung on my arm at first half Km.

That's 3 PBs in a row, 25Km, 7Km and 15Km.

The Gold Cup Trot & a 25K PB at the Kensington Harvest Fest

It was cloudy and 19 degrees.

The Gold Cup Trot at Victoria Park. The loop course on Victoria Park, Brighton Rd, University Ave and Old Charlottetown along the parade route.

Daniel Lewis won the race and Grace Annear for the top female.

I finished in 18:03 and came in 7th out of 155 runners.

It was Cloudy and 20 degrees.

The Kensington Harvest Fest 25km at Free Church of Scotland. The course on Stanchel, Rose Valley, Shamrock, Kinkora, Freetown, Mill Valley and Kensington.

Mike MacKinnon won the race and Elita Rahn for the top female.

I finished in 1:48:33, beat my 25km PB, 9:14 faster than last year and came in 8th out of 79 runners. I won a great pair of shoes!
