Congrats Island Girls!! iRun's Running Group Challenge!

Island-Girls_400x300.jpg

iRunNation, we challenged you to tell us why your Running Group was the best in the country and we promised to share our favourite stories. Congratulations to The Island Girls, our number 1 Running Group.

What started as a 10-week learn to run 5K program in Kensington, P.E.I. quickly became The Island Girls Running Group, thanks to Lynn Anne Hogan and Ronda Bellefontaine who began sharing their new love of running with members of their community in 2007. The Island Girls trained and ran in many PEI Roadrunner 5K and 10K events but it was during a trip to Halifax, NS to run the 10K at the Bluenose Marathon in 2009 that the girls decided to set a new goal: to run the half marathon during the 2009 PEI Marathon weekend.

“I could not have achieved my running success without the support of the Island Girls. I never considered myself athletic, so the feeling I had when I crossed the finish line at the half marathon was really indescribable. If it wasn’t for this group, I would not be running today. I joined the program to get some exercise but I have found a group of fun, supportive, encouraging women,” says Shelly Saulier who has completed numerous 5K, 10K and half marathon events.

It’s an amazing feeling when you realize that you’ve layed a part in helping others lead a more active and healthy life. In 2010-2011, we not only added five new members to our Club but we have also seen an increase in the number of husbands taking up the sport. We all love inspiring people to start running by telling them that we started by walking three minutes and running 30 seconds, and that they can too. Not only has the group been learning to run together for almost four years, we have also organized and delivered the Halloween Hustle 5K Fun Run held each year in Kensington for the past four years, an event that raises funds for local charities and attracts many new runners and walkers, including many families.

2010-11 was a very busy year for the Island Girls. Many secured PBs in 5K and 10K Roadrunner events. Others completed their first half marathon and four Island Girls completed their first full marathons right here in PEI. We are very proud of our accomplishments. Four years ago we would never have thought that we could run more than 5K and look at us now. We enjoy supporting not only each other but also other new runners that we meet during the many PEI Roadrunner events that we participate in. This is exactly the outcome that Lynn Anne and Ronda were hoping for when they brought their love of running to the town of Kensington.

Hardcopy Reaction - Alex finally gets his hands on an iRun Magazine

Thanks to my sister who lives in a city with a Running Room and was good enough to drop in and
grab some copies of the January iRun magazine and send them to us,
Alex was finally able to see himself recognized as an iRun Award winner in print today.

As I expected, his reaction was "bigger" seeing himself in a magazine than it had been to seeing it on a webpage. (After all, his story began being told on web pages, by me, 14 years ago). It was even bigger than his reaction to seeing it covered on CBC's Compass News (but again, it's not the first time he's been on Compass)

First I had to interrupt his Olympic Relay Run (Wii) ..... He quickly flipped through the magazine to find himself and read the article aloud to me.... (if you want to read along, I've repeated the text below)

iRun for Autism Awareness, Acceptance and Inclusion.

At the age of 20, PEI native Alex Bain's unwavering dedication to running already sets him apart from most of his peers. Bain races almost every weekend. He has broken the 20-minute mark in the 5k and is very close to breaking 40 minutes in the 10k. He just completed his first full marathon in an impressive time of 3:29:29.

But his age isn't the only thing that’s special about Bain; he was diagnosed as autistic at the age of three. Today, a huge part of Alex’s motivation each time he laces up his shoes is to promote awareness about autism – and the fact that he, and many others like him, wish for acceptance, not a cure. “Autism makes me different from my friends,” says Bain. “That’s OK.” As his trademark yellow race t-shirt spells out, Bain is “Running For Autism, Not Against It.”

In July 2006, Alex (accompanied by his mother, Janet Norman-Bain, who played both support crew and videographer) embarked on a run from tip-to-tip of PEI to raise money for autism awareness and risk and safety management. But even this challenge – he averaged between 20-25k per day – didn’t quite prepare him for what the last stretch of his marathon would feel like: Bain admits he hit the wall with 10k to go, “the first time I’ve done three hours of running.” Still, he exceeded his projected time goal by more than five minutes.

Bain is no stranger to awards; he has also been crowned PEI RoadRunners Rookie of the Year, Junior RoadRunner of the Year and Inspirational Runner of the Year.

Recognition for autism run

Recognition for autism run

P.E.I. runner Alex Bain has been named one of Canada's most inspirational runners by iRun magazine.

Bain's run for autism awareness is highlighted in the magazine's January issue.

The magazine outlines the 2006 run Bain undertook to raise awareness for autism. During July of that year, Bain covered 20 to 25 kilometres a day in a tip-to-tip run across the province.

Bain was diagnosed with autism when he was three.

Thank you, whoever nominated him, they didn't tell me who you are.

I've known about this for a while now but Alex only learned about it just now when I saw it had shown up up their website and showed him. They will be sending him a copy of the magazine since we are without a Running Room or Runner's Den here (you can pick up a free copy at any Running Room or subscribe here).

Thanks too Jessica Aldred, Associate Editor, for so nicely capturing the essence of Alex in the bio she wrote.

    Congratulations Alex!

"I like to thanks to Stanley Chaisson for training me, Chris Brake for inspiring me, my mom for drives to races and all members from PEI Road Runner Club. Special Thanks for Dianne and Elaine for big hugs." Alex

iRun

More than a million Canadians are runners, making it this country's most popular recreational and fitness activity. Canadians run for exercise and we run to raise money for important causes. We run alone and in groups. And every year, hundreds of thousands of us participate in organized races, from fun runs to marathons, which are growing steadily.

Until now, Canadian runners haven't had our own running magazine. But now, there's iRun, providing a uniquely Canadian perspective on the activity and the sport. Published six times a year, iRun educates, informs and inspires Canadian runners.

Distribution

Through partnerships with iRun, every participant in the Ottawa Race Weekend, the Mississauga Marathon and the BMO Bank of Montreal Vancouver Marathon will receive a copy of the inaugural issue of iRun and a complimentary one-year subscription to the magazine. iRun will also be available at Running Room stores across Canada, at other retail outlets and through on-site distribution at running events.
