Run 4 Wishes starts Tuesday

A terminally sick child from P.E.I. will soon be on a plane to Disney World thanks to a team of sailors who begin a gruelling five-day marathon fundraiser today.
Twenty-three crew members from HMCS Charlottetown will run from one tip of P.E.I. to the other to raise money for the Children’s Wish Foundation.
This is the seventh year the navy ship’s crew has held the Run 4 Wishes campaign, which has seen its fundraising efforts soar every year.
The 23 crew members who volunteered for this year’s run have been training for months for their marathon that will see them cover between 50 and 100 kilometres a day for the next five days.
But every member of the team seems happy and even eager to run the distances. That’s because they’re committed to making the wishes of terminally ill children on P.E.I. come true.
“We didn’t pick any individuals out with marathon experience or anything like that, these people all want to do this,” said team leader PO1 John Guillion.
“When you look at the end product and understand the cause the money we’re raising is going towards, how could you not want to get involved in something like that.”
Last year, the team raised over $67,000 from generous Islanders — the single largest amount ever raised by the Run 4 Wishes.
This year, the crew is not setting a goal amount, due to the recession. Nonetheless, they remain confident Islanders will be as generous this year as they have been in the past.
“All we are is a conduit — we give Islanders the opportunity to show how generous they are,” HMCS Charlottetown’s new Commanding Officer Craig Skjerpen said during a press conference Monday in Charlottetown. “They’re always ready to support this great cause.”
Beth Gauthier of the Children’s Wish Foundation praised the crew taking part in this year’s run. She told them how much their efforts mean to sick kids on P.E.I.
“Once they’re diagnosed, they lose control. They’re being told how to have treatment, they’re being told when they can go to school, when they’re in quarantine — a wish is a time for them to be in control, they are in control of what their wish will be and it is a memory making time for them as well as their families,” Gauthier said.
Some children wish to go to Disney World, some want to meet their favourite celebrity and some wishes are very simple. Gauthier told the sailors about one Island boy who recently wished to have his grandparents move home from western Canada to be with him. Children’s Wish Foundation was able to grant this boy’s wish, thanks in part to the fundraising efforts of the HMCS Charlottetown crew.
“Never take lightly what you are doing here,” she told them Monday.
Jennifer Coles, a boatswain from Stanley Bridge, P.E.I. currently serving aboard the Charlottetown, will accompany the running crew this week. With loudspeaker in hand, Coles hopes to keep the runners motivated and get Islanders out to greet them and donate to the cause as they run by.
“This is all for the children — everybody has been fundraising, the legions have been doing Bingos and different communities have been raising money for the past few months so it’s the Islanders that have made this event so special,” she said, smiling.
“We’re just here to run and serve cake.”
The run starts today at North Cape and ends Saturday, Aug. 8 in Charlottetown. Over the five days, the runners will visit more than 25 communities from the eastern tip to the western tip of the Island.

HMCS Charlottetown Run 4 Wishes itinerary:
- Tuesday – Run begins at North Cape Lighthouse ending in Summerside. Barbecues will be held at all Sobey’s locations and team will bag groceries at Summerside Sobey’s.
- Wednesday – Run continues starting in East Point ending in Montague. Team bags groceries at Montague Sobey’s.

A light drizzle was falling Tuesday morning as crew members of the HMCS Charlottetown set out from North Cape on their tip-totip Run4Wishes.

That was okay, though, said Leading Seaman Michael Murphy, organizer of the navy ship's sixth annual run for the Children's Wish Foundation. It keeps the team cool, he explained.

Team members will need to stay cool as they take turns running in a relay that takes them from one end of the province to the other.

The team's goal, Murphy said, is to raise enough money to grant four wishes for children with life-threatening illness. The average cost of a wish is between $10,000 and $12,000.

Accompanying the team on the first leg of their run was nine year-old Dylan Allain and his father Randy. Dylan sprinted to the head of the pack as several team members set out together from North Cape just before 8:30 am Tuesday.

It's fun and you get exercise and you help kids who are sick, Dylan said in explaining his participation during a rest stop in Alberton. This is his third year with the team and he is enjoying every minute of the experience.

They are so good to him, said Dylan's mother Marie. He talks of joining the navy when he's of age.

A lead team for the run had visited St. Louis school in May and encouraged students and staff to help Dylan, a Grade 4 student there, raise money for the cause. They responded. Of the $1,122.57 in pledges he had collected by Tuesday, $1,036.27 was raised at the school.

Dylan is planning on rejoining the team for their run into Charlottetown on Saturday. We might be able to pick up a few more dollars this week, said his mother. Murphy said the team had raised or received $20,000 for their cause before even setting out on Tuesday's run. By comparison, they had $12,000 in the boot at the start of last year's event.

They raised $13,000 through activities on the ship. During a reception Monday night in Montague, the Run4Wishes team received $4,395 from a road toll collected there. I guess that's really a challenge to the rest of the Island to see if they can meet or exceed that, Murphy said of Montague's contribution.

He's confident their new target of granting four wishes is achievable, and said any amount over that is gravy.

This is a big week for us, said Murphy. We're showing that the military is here to support the community the best we can. We're showing that we care and we're taking care of business back home.

The sixth annual Run 4 Wishes team starts running across P.E.I. this morning.
The 23 team members — all part of the crew of the HMCS Charlottetown — are running to raise money for the Children’s Wish Foundation.
The run starts today at North Cape and ends Saturday, Aug. 9 in Charlottetown. Over the five days, the runners will visit more than 25 communities from the eastern tip to the western tip of the Island.
Team leader and leading seaman Michael Murphy said there are two goals for this year’s event.
“The first goal is to raise as much money as we can for the Children’s Wish Foundation. The second goal is to meet as many people on Prince Edward Island as possible.
“It’s our namesake city and province, so we added an extra day from Wood Islands to West Royalty Sobey’s, so we could touch more people in the province.”
Murphy spoke at a press conference held yesterday to launch the run.
He said he hopes Islanders will come out to support the team and run with them.
“We don’t get to come to P.E.I. too often, so when we do come here, we try to make as big an impact as possible, and we really want to get out and see everybody on the Island, and we’re hoping that everybody can come out and see us.”
There will be a barbeque at Sobey’s stores across P.E.I. each day of the run, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sobey’s is one of the major sponsors of the event and has been with the team since they started running six years ago.
A Sea King helicopter will also be making landings throughout the week at various communities to promote the run.
This year, Run 4 Wishes is hoping to raise enough money to grant wishes to four Island children.
Each wish costs an average of $11,000. The HMCS Charlottetown has already raised $13,000 through fundraising efforts on their ship. Last year, the run raised a total of $32,000.
“The more money we can provide for (the foundation) means the more wishes they can grant for children that need them the most, to put the smile back on their faces,” said Murphy.
Lee Gauthier, representing the Children’s Wish Foundation, expressed his gratitude to the runners and the whole crew of the ship for their efforts.
“The endurance level is something some people don’t realize. I mean, to run for the next five days and to be pounding on the pavement, and also doing the community work that you will be doing . . . we certainly appreciate the effort you put in,” he told the runners.
The HMCS Charlottetown is docked in Halifax right now, but travels all over the world. Crew members hail from across Canada, said Murphy, and there is at least one Islander participating in the run this week.
Islanders can donate to Run 4 Wishes by dropping by any of the Sobey’s barbeques, the foundation’s office in Charlottetown or visiting the website. You can also donate at any Credit Union across the Island.

A team of military runners is lacing up its boots to help grant wishes to children.
Run 4 Wishes is an annual event hosted by HMCS Charlottetown for the ship’s charity, the Children’s Wish Foundation. This is the sixth year for the event.
The group of seamen participating in the event will run a total of 364 kilometres over five days in August, travelling from North Cape to East Point and many places in between.
Leading Seaman Michael Murphy has been involved with the event since it began in 2003.
He said it has received a lot of support since the first year when they raised $3,000 for the charity. During last year’s run, they raised $32,000.
“You can see it has gained a great deal of momentum,” he said in an interview.
The number of runners has also increased from four to 25.
Murphy said it helps that they’re running for such a heart-warming cause.
“It’s for the kids so it’s an easy sell.”
So far, they’ve been able to grant wishes to six children, and want to grant several more with the $40,000 they hope to raise at this year’s event.
“The key focus is we’d like to grant four wishes this year,” he said.
The event’s symbol is a large sneaker the team picked up while in New York City in 2004 during Fleet Week.
Murphy said they saw two large sneakers there, and after some persuasion were able to take one home. While it was originally for one of the crew member’s sons, they decided to use it for the run instead.
The boot will also travel with the runners to several locations, but it won’t be on foot.
“There’s going to be a military truck carrying the boot around,” he said.
The run will take place Aug. 5-9, with runners travelling an average of 73 kilometres a day.
At the end of each day, they’ll stop their run at various Sobeys locations in the province, where a barbecue and bouncy house will be open to the public and donations will be accepted.
Anyone who wants to make a donation can also stop in at the Children’s Wish Foundation office, located at 22 Allen St. in Charlottetown.
During the run, the boot is scheduled to stop at several locations for donations pickups as well.

From the PEI RoadRunners Message Board

Run 4 Wishes 2008
Posted on June 2, 2008 at 01:45:14 PM by Run 4 Wishes 2008

First of all the Captain and Crew of HMCS CHARLOTTETOWN would like to thank everyone that participated in last years event. With your support we were able to raise over $32,000 which in turn, granted 3 much needed wishes for Island children.

The organizing team for Run 4 Wishes 2008 will be heading to PEI next week to have meetings with various groups and organizations to plan for this summers event which will take place on August 4th-9th. In saying that we are hoping that ALL PEI Roadrunners can come and meet us at the Charlottetown Allen street Sobeys location in the communtiy room for a brief on this years event. The brief will be held from 7:00-8:00pm on Tuesday 10 June 2008 and refreshments will be provided. At this brief we will go through all the information that you could possibly need to have alot of fun and raise money for such a worthy cause, The Childrens Wish Foundation.
We will also be passing out sponsor sheets and be open to any and all suggestions on how to help make Run 4 Wishes 2008 that much more of a success so that we can beat last years number and grant even more wishes.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Team Leader Leading Seaman Michael Murphy by email at murphy.mw@forces.gc.ca or on the ship at 1-902-427-2762.
