The Canadian Death Race - Good Luck Islanders!

Good luck wishes going out to Islanders
Kim Bailey, Marian Grant & Doug MacEachern
who are taking on the
Canadian Death Race this weekend.

"Since the start of the millennium, elite racers have come to the Canadian Rockies to cheat Death in one of the world's toughest adventure races. The 125 km course begins and ends on a 4200 foot plateau, passes over three mountain summits and includes 17,000 feet of elevation change and a major river crossing at the spectacular Hell's Gate canyon at the confluence of the Smoky and Sulphur Rivers. During the August long weekend each year, extreme athletes, individually and in relays, push themselves to the limits of their endurance against the breathtaking background of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Each year, well-trained and totally committed, they battle heat, cold, altitude and themselves. There are no big prizes for winning: finishing is hard enough. And the bragging rights are priceless…"

You've worked & trained hard for this.
Have fun (?!), enjoy the challenge and celebrate
as many moments as you can from the start line to the finish line.

Looking forward to the stories....

Fall Frolic Set for New Harmony

Fall Frolic Set for New Harmony

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI -- A unique event that takes runners, hikers and walkers through a scenic fall forest setting, the Provincial Forest Fall Frolic is set for October 6 at the New Harmony Demonstration Woodlot near Souris.

Minister of Environment, Energy and Forestry George Webster says the Fall Frolic is a great way for Islanders to enjoy the provincial forest lands in eastern Prince Edward Island.

"Our provincial forests offer many recreational possibilities year-round. But October is a particularly beautiful time of year to visit these properties because of the spectacular fall colours," the Minister said.

The Fall Frolic is hosted by the Prince Edward Island Roadrunners Club and the Provincial Forest Section of the Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry.

There are two courses. The shorter 4.6 kilometre course is perfect for beginning runners, joggers and walkers - including families with baby strollers. The longer course is 12.3 kilometres and takes the runner over the Scenic Heritage Road in New Harmony, along a section of the Confederation Trail, and then back along the Scenic Heritage Road to the demonstration woodlot and the sprint to the finish.

The course was designed in 1999 by Kim Bailey of the Roadrunners Club and Kevin Brothers of the Provincial Forest Section. They set out to create a family-oriented event that would also challenge runners so that points could be awarded by the Roadrunners Club. Drawing 51 runners the first year, the Provincial Forest Fall Frolic, has grown each year since then. There is now a hard core group of between 70 and 80 runners who participate in the event. Their dedication was clearly demonstrated in 2005 when wet conditions failed to put a damper on the day.

"The community nature of the Fall Frolic is something we strive to accomplish each year," said Kim Bailey. "For the past five years, the registration fees have been donated to MacIntyre House, a non-profit group home that is located in Souris."

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and both runs begin at 10 a.m. Entry fees are $9 for Roadrunner members and $10 for non-members. A barbecue will be held after the run and, thanks to local sponsors, there will be a draw for door prizes.
