RED ISLAND RELAY
2 June 2008
Thirty-one-years and counting for PEI’s favourite relay race. Once an extremely competitive and attractive relay race with more than 220 teams , the former Red Cross Relay race has, in recent years, lost its mojo- hitting a low of 63 teams in 2007. However, there are been signs of a revival. Under new management (Outside Expeditions), Ardelle, Brad, and Ken have stepped up to the plate and took over this great race. Their organization skills have been flawless, however, they need the help of the community to the race back to its hay-days. Here are some feedback/suggestions I’ve observed from this years race.
Firstly, I believe the premiere need of improvement is in the promotion side of the race. There should be a promotion strategy within the high schools, colleges, universities, corporate offices around PEI, NS, NB. Remember in past races, there have been teams come to PEI from all over the Atlantic provinces, Ontario and even the States for this relay. Get student councils involved in promoting this race. The team participants since 2004 (furthest online record) are as follows:
2004- 182 teams
2005- 157 teams
2006- 72 teams
2007- 63 teams
2008- 70 teams
2009- 78 teams
I believe the community needs to come together and help promote this race and get it back on its feet.
The second area that I’d like to bring some attention to is recognition of the winning participants. The is a huge need for people to be recognized for their hard work. That’s why it is imperative for people to be recognized for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category as well as overall placing which hasn’t been seen since the last year Red Cross ran the race. This provides an incentive for people to come back next year or work harder for these awards. People who are rewarded for their efforts leave feeling happy and are return supports as well as they promote the race to their peers. This year’s race I believe the is a need for adequate recognition for each category and overall placings. In addition, I suggest there should be a big creative trophy for teams to work towards winning. For example, similar to the Giant Rock trophy for the Cabot Trail Relay or like the Stanley Cup for hockey. There should be something that signifies the race and PEI. A local artist could make–this is feasible.
The final area I’d like to touch on is an energetic fun environment. Like the Cabot Trail Relay (which has upwards of 1000 participants), they have a best custom category for teams that dress up, music along every stage, announcers enthusiastically announcing incoming racers as they cross the line, themes at every water-stop, a social event afterwards. The former Red Cross Relay had a 6th leg of the race which was a social leg in the evening.
Anyways that’s enough of my rant for today, but I encourage people to speak up, send in suggestions, become involved and support this great race. If we all pull together as a community, we can bring this race to life. Until next race, happy training.
